At age nine Robert Stephen Carter became a stepson of a granddaughter of John Henry Brock. During the years he lived in Austin with his father and stepmother, he had several occasions to enjoy the generous attention, hospitality and kindness of his stepmother's mother, a daughter of John Henry Brock. He hopes that this work will provide useful context and warrant some degree of positive perspective regarding a sad period in the life of John Henry Brock. If it also promotes reflection upon other lives as well, so much the better.
