Immanuel Kant is arguably the most influential modern philosopher, but is also one of the most difficult. In this illuminating Very Short Introduction, Roger Scruton--a well-known and controversial philosopher in his own right--tackles his exceptionally complex subject with a strong hand, exploring the background to Kant's work and showing why Critique of Pure Reason has proved so enduring.

Reviews

Review from previous edition Roger Scruton faced perhaps the most intractable task of all in giving an elementary account of Kant's philosophy ... but he does it extremely elegantly and neatly. * Listener *

Kant is important to understand for a few reasons. The first is that he's a first rate genius next to Aristotle and Stephenie Meyer, and it's good to appreciate people with intelligence like this, keeps you grounded. The second is that he is enormously influential, up to and including contemporary (or only freshly dead) thinkers. The third is that if you are a certain kind of English speaking human who is still at war with communism, it's good to know Kant, who influenced Hegel, who influenced Marx, who then influenced John F Kennedy.
Also this was once printed under the 'Past Masters' series from Oxford, so if you get that out of a library (like I did) and then become confused when wanting to purchase a copy (like I was), don't be alarmed. Croutons approaches Kant with real clarity and noticeable enthusiasm. I learnt more about Kant from this book than I have from anywhere else.

In the world of philosophy, Kant is huge, pretty much the biggest there is in modern philosophy. Which is why this book is such an excellent one, well worth reading: because Scruton offers a short, readable, yet highly informative introduction to Kant. He explains Kant's thought (and it is not small; the man wrote and awful lot) superbly well, and discusses his major works with particular insight. The best introduction to Kant.
