Science Book & FictionThe Kingfisher Young People's Book of Planet Earth is a compact 96-page volume that addresses a wide variety of science topics associated with our planet Earth. The vast majority of the topics are from both a biological and earth science orientation. Forty-two topics are presented with an extensive index and a detailed glossary of 67 terms. The illustrations and photographs are well connected with the prose. The best use for this volume would be at the middle school level or higher, where a review of topics could serve as an enrichment resource. Readers need to be aware that many topics have been excluded (e.g., El Nino is included, but La Nina is not). The colorful nature of the book is its strength. A table of Earth facts, including information about worldwide major earthquakes and volcanoes, properties of minerals, and a geological timeline, is beneficial, but not connected to the body of the volume. Acceptable, Grades 7-12. REVIEWER: Lloyd H. Barrow (University of Missouri)
