In "The Last Heroes," it is June 1941. War clouds break over Europe, and determined that the United States will be prepared, Franklin D. Roosevelt and "Wild Bill" Donovan orchestrate the most complex espionage organization in history, the Office of Strategic Services. Young and daring, the handpicked members of the OSS assemble under a thin camouflage of diplomacy and then disperse throughout the world to conduct operations upon which may hinge the entire outcome of the war. And of them all, no operation may be more critical than the one being conducted by hotshot pilot Richard Canidy and his half-German wild-card friend Eric Fulmar: to secure the rare ore that will power a top-secret weapon coveted on both sides of the Atlantic - the atomic bomb.

First in the 'Men At War' series by this author and similar to his other series. Here we meet Lieutenant's Richard L Canidy and Edwin H Bitter, both pilots of the United States Navy. Two different personalities are hard to imagine, Edwin being an upright respectable kind of young man, dedicated to the cause, whilst Richard is a womanising, egotistical, hedonist. They clash, of course, but it is heavily tempered by being in the same armed forces unit under those restrictions upon their personal freedom in most areas. With this as a base, the adventure continues as Richard basically goes undercover to help China's airforce defend against Japanese attacks. Of course he complicates the whole thing by having a sexual relationship with a married relative of Edwin's. What complexity of emotions mixed with action, a great ride.
