Leigh Straw is a Perth-based historian and historical fiction writer. Her non-fiction work 'Drunks, Pests and Harlots' won a Fremantle History Award in 2014. She is currently writing a true crime biography of the Sydney underworld figure, Kate Leigh, who also featured in the author's historical fiction book 'Sophia Lane'.
'What's the right formula for success when you're starting a crime series? Go local? Embed the characters with authenticity? Set up conflicts and make readers care? [Leigh Straw] has done a fine job with this local novel ... She has drawn her law-enforcement characters with a sophisticated hand, standing out from the crowd by not sketching the kind of simple stick-figure characters common to debutantes of the crime- series scene.'
