They'll take you through a year in the life of New York's kids, from celebrations, traditions and events, to the everyday way of life and the little things that make childhood so memorable. A New York Year is a picture book showcasing the cultural diversity of the state. It's a snapshot of New Yorkers, blending modern-day culture and lifestyle with the traditions of yesteryear. Its pages feature meandering text, dates and gorgeous illustrations showcasing five New Yorker children at play, at school, at home, and enjoying the sights and sites of New York. For its intended target audience (beginner level : knows how to move, but need guidance on how to find the next ‘good’ move), it is perfect. What can be a better way to learn chess other than watching complete grandmaster games with each move thoroughly explained.

Definitely a classic primer for any chess enthusiasts who needs to learn how to crawl before running.

Now, this book was written back in the fifties, so it is to expected that openings featured are quite dated. Also, with no computers to help with analysis, quite a number of tactical errors are present. Don’t get me wrong though, this book is good, it’s just not perfect (nothing is). Once you have mastered the principles espoused in this book, then may I suggest proceeding with these two : John Nunn’s “Understand Chess Move by Move” and Neil McDonald’s “Chess: Art of Logical Thinking”.
