Making Master Guitars is a craftsman's handbook about the exciting and challenging pursuit of making classical guitars, a craft that the author reveals to be surprisingly accessible by following his instructions.

Part one of the book is devoted to separate chapters on each famous maker, including Antonio de Torres, Hermann Hauser, Santos Hernandez, Hernandez y Arguado, Ignacio Fleta, Robert Bouchet, Daniel Friederich and Jose Romanillos. The reader will find historical information about the life of and influences on each maker, detailed sets of working drawings for their guitars, as well as rare photographs.

Part two provides essential information about the tools, working environment and materials needed by the guitar maker.

Part three comprises a step-by-step method of guitar construction, illustrated by numerous photographs and drawings. This book will be essential both for the guitar maker and the historian, providing as it does a unique record of the different methods of guitar design.

Roy Courtnall's book is a wonderful read .It contains a wealth of detail for budding luthiers and is no doubt of interest to professionals who may or may not agree with his approach to the construction of classical guitars. However, I do have one gripe. The drawings in the volume are in the main good but insufficient notice has been taken of the design of some of the peg heads, most notably that of the Fleta guitar which, in its graphic presentation is just plain wrong. Those of Santos Hernandez and Robert Bouchet, while representative, display a lack of attention to detail and have little aesthetic appeal. these issues aside the book is nonetheless very comprehensive with many many fine photographs.
