Ann Burton was born on a river bank the night her father tried to burn the house down. Six years later her sister Liza disappears while they are staying at their uncle's property. What Ann sees that day robs her of her memory and her speech. Ann escapes her anguished childhood, finding love and a new life away from Mallawindy. But there is no escape from the Burton family and its dark secrets. Ann must return to Mallawindy and confront the past if she is ever to be free.

This book covers so many dark topics--domestic violence, child abuse, alcoholism, and yet it is surprisingly readable. It centres on Ann, the baby born too early while her father is trying to burn down the house, the little girl who was left behind when her father's favourite disappeared, the child who stops speaking and then starts again. I found the book and the characters compelling, and Detman managed to make me feel some sympathy even for those characters I thought i should loathe.
