About the Author

Ted A. Baumgartner, PhD, earned his undergraduate degree in physical education from Oklahoma State University, his master’s degree in physical education from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, and his doctorate from the University of Iowa. He was on the faculty at Indiana University from 1967 to 1977, teaching measurement courses and statistics courses. Since 1977, he has been a professor at the University of Georgia teaching measurement courses, statistics courses, and introduction to research courses. Dr. Baumgartner is a co-author of the book Measurement for Evaluation in Physical Education and Exercise Science, Eighth Edition, also from Jones & Bartlett Learning. He started the journal Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science and was the first editor of the journal. Dr. Baumgartner is a member of the National Academy of Kinesiology. Dr. Andrew “Tony” Jackson, F.A.C.S.M., is presently Professor Emeritus at the University of Houston (UH). He earned his advanced degrees from the University of Minnesota (1963) and Indiana University (1969). He was a professor at UH for 45 years and taught courses on measurement/evaluation, and research design/methods. While at UH he also held a research consultantship at the Cardio-Pulmonary Laboratory, NASA/Johnson Space Center and was an adjunct professor at Baylor College of Medicine. His focus of research was physiologicaltest validation. The focus of the research was body composition and aerobic capacity and he has published extensively on these topics. He worked in industry to develop legal and valid pre-employment tests for physically demanding jobs. Tony conducted public health research examining the influence of exercise on obesity and health. He had major research funding on these topics from the National Institute of Health (NIH). He presently works on aging research at the Udde Research Center and Rowing Club located at Onalaska, Texas. He is an avid rower. Matthew T. Mahar is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at East Carolina University and Director of the Activity Promotion Laboratory. He holds a BS degree in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland and an MEd in Exercise Science and an EdD in Measurement and Research in Exercise Science from the University of Houston. Dr. Mahar has taught and coached at the high school level and has conducted research in schools and in after-school programs. He is a member of the FitnessGram Scientific Advisory Committee and a former member of the President’s Council for Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Science Board. Dr. Mahar received the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and the East Carolina University Scholar-Teacher Award. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and of the National Academy of Kinesiology. He enjoys exercising every day, tracking his steps, and RAGBRAI. David A. Rowe is a Reader in Exercise Science at the University of Strathclyde. He has a BEd in physical education from the University of Worcester, a MS in health science from Springfield College, and a PhD in exercise science from the University of Georgia. Prior to his college teaching career, Dr. Rowe taught physical education and coached several sports at the elementary school and high school level, in three different countries. He has served as a section editor and editorial board member of several journals, is co-founder (with Dr. Baumgartner) of the journal Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, and is a past Chair of the AAHPERD Measurement and Evaluation Council. His research has been published in over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and via over 150 national and international conference presentations. His favorite modes of escape from sitting at a desk include hiking in the Scottish countryside, riding a mountain bike, and pulling weeds.
