Mind Whispering

New or Used: $16.00
The aim of Mind Whispering is to transform us into more fully integrated human beings - mentally, emotionally and interpersonally. By using the practical techniques within it, our minds can be more free, our perceptions more true, our responses more artful, our connections more genuine - and our hearts happier. Tara Bennett-Goleman's first book, Emotional Alchemy, was a New York Times bestseller and translated into 25 languages. It looked at deep patterns that can rule the most troubling times in our lives. In her new work, Mind Whispering, the author ranges more widely, drawing on the very latest ideas in cognitive psychology, neuroscience and Eastern traditions to offer a fresh vision of how we can free ourselves from our most negative frames of mind. Through 'mind whispering' practices, she shows how we can become more positive, and cultivate states of being that are ultimately healing and beneficial.

An important book by a leading figure in the worlds of mindfulness, cognitive therapy and research into how our brains work

About the Author

Tara Bennett-Goleman is a psychotherapist and teacher who has studied for more than two decades with Buddhist masters from Tibet, Nepal and Burma. Her postgraduate training was at the Cognitive Therapy Center in New York. She is married to Daniel Goleman (author of Emotional Intelligence), and travels with him all over the world, giving talks, workshops and conflict resolution programmes.

Blending cognitive psychology, Eastern philosophy, neuroscience, and lessons from the animal kingdom, psychotherapist Bennett-Goleman (Emotional Alchemy) outlines the destructive thought patterns that beget emotional instability, and offers solutions for changing them. After defining the most common negative core beliefs-e.g., subjugation, or the sense that "my wishes and feelings don't count"; unlovability, the belief that one is essentially defective; and fear of abandonment-the author teaches readers to pinpoint their triggers, recognize damaging mental habits, counteract knee-jerk reactions, decide upon a healthier response, and assert oneself in a productive way. "Sometimes a perspective shift is all it takes to change your reaction," she opines. As is the case with most self-help books of this sort, that's easier said than done. But Bennett-Goleman is nevertheless a clear and capable guide. In addition to her treatment of the individual, she also turns a lens on the world at large, advising readers on how to apply these principles to intimate relationships as well as everyday encounters with coworkers, friends, and strangers, and provides suggestions for how to feel empathy for others struggling with their own self-defeating behaviors. A thought-provoking and practical way to reassess one's emotional life. Agent: Linda Loewenthal, David Black Agency. (May) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Psychotherapist Bennett-Goleman (The Horse Whisperer, LJ 7/95) synthesizes a variety of disciplines, such as Buddhism, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience, to describe her method of changing negative habits into healthy ones. As one might expect, she draws parallels to working with horses and recommends being aware of one's environment. In order to overcome unhealthy habits, the author advocates mindfulness, loving kindness, and meditation. VERDICT Will appeal to devotees of Eastern philosophy. (c) Copyright 2013.
