Excerpt from The Modern Warship There are two distinct types of the modern war ship of large size, viz. - the battleship and the battle cruiser. The former has thicker armour, more guns and less' speed than the latter. The calibre of the guns now employed in these types of vessel is the same and the great speed of the battle - cruiser is obtained at the sacrifice of armour protection and number of guns. This distinction may be illustrated by the comparison on page 2 between the Hercules and Indefatigable and between the Orion and the Lion, in regard to which particulars have been officially published.
