About the Author

PENNY VINCENZI is the international bestselling author of fourteen novels, including Sheer Abandon, An Absolute Scandal, The Best of Times, and the highly successful Lytton family trilogy. Before becoming a full-time novelist, she worked as a journalist for Vogue, Tattler, and Cosmopolitan, among other publications. She was also the first fashion editor at Nova, a seminal woman's magazine of the 1960s, known as Britain's "style bible." Penny has four daughters and divides her time between London and South Wales.

"[A] glamour-drenched guilty pleasure." --O, The Oprah Magazine "Penny Vincenzi writes . . . fast-paced novels with plots and subplots so deftly manipulated that it's impossible to start reading one and still lead a productive life." --The Washington Post

"Just in time to fill the gap between seasons of Downton Abbey, Vincenzi's book captures all the elements Anglophiles love: romance that crosses social boundaries; meddling matriarchs; witty dialogue; and characters so richly drawn you'll feel as if you've lost friends when the book is over." --USA Today "With her well-drawn characters and engaging style, Vincenzi keeps things humming." --People

"A lively romp filled with fashion, scandal, and lots of glamour, all tied up for the requisite happy ending." --Publishers Weekly "The plot-twist queen." --Adriana Trigiani, author of The Queen of the Big Time

"There are few things better in life than the knowledge that sitting on your bedside table is the latest novel by Penny Vincenzi. . . . A gem, Penny never fails her devoted fans." --The Daily Express

"A cultural portrait, painted in brilliant pop-culture colors." --Bookreporter

"Teeming with memorable characters, this is pure pleasure, Vincenzi-style." --Woman & Home

Listening to this exceedingly long title pleasingly read by Rosalyn Landor, the listener encounters the opportunities and challenges of mid-/late 1960s England and the variety of responses by these strong personalities. The plot and subplots focus on relationships and ambitions. Central to the story is rebuilding World War II-ravaged London, the need to restore the ancestral Summercourt, the imbalances between the long-established privileged class and successful entrepreneurial men and women, infidelity, abortion, and divorce, with a bitter custody battle. With numerous characters, the book presents the challenge of getting each correctly connected in the listener's mind, but it is worth the effort. VERDICT While this book is more than chick lit or a traditional romance, the story will appeal more strongly to women.-M. Gail Preslar, formerly with Eastman Chemical Co.
