Rabbi Levi Meier, PhD, is chaplain of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is a clinical psychologist and was one of the religious leaders who "screened" The Prince of Egypt for the DreamWorks Studio. He is also the author of Moses-The Prince, the Prophet: His Life, Legend & Message for our Lives and Ancient Secrets: Using the Stories of the Bible to Improve Our Everyday Lives (Jewish Lights).
Rabbi and clinical psychologist Meier (Ancient Secrets: Using the Stories of the Bible to Improve Our Everyday Lives, Villard, 1996) here presents a condensed version of the life of Moses. Chapters on deliverance, faith, kindness, and compassion review the story, and the book ends with ten important insights gained from the tale. The simple reading of the Old Testament and midrash (biblical interpretation) gives the reader a feeling of a story only half told and seems to disregard a large part of human existence. Meier has not written a religious work but rather a personal guide to fulfillment and healing. The study uses many quotes in a haphazard and eclectic manner, and Meier's description of symbols and ideas lacks intellectual depth and insight, confusing religious thought and historic incident. Recommended only for New Age and self-help collections.‘Gene Shaw, New York P.L.
