Howard Gurney was born in Sydney, Australia and is the author of six novels and multiple peer-reviewed medical journal articles. He works as a medical oncologist at Westmead Hospital in Sydney and is also a professor of medicine at Macquarie University, where he undertakes clinical trials for cancer patients. Howard has witnessed countless weird and wonderful things in medicine, where the truth really is stranger than fiction; cancers resolving for no obvious reason, strange illnesses which can only sometimes be explained, things that are thought to be cancer but are not, and also benign looking illnesses that end up as malignant. He's been on the cancer journey with thousands of patients - sometimes thrilling, sometimes outlandish, but unfortunately often tragic and sad, and is constantly amazed by the resilience of his patients and how often 'life goes on' right up until the last minute. For Howard, that's real life. But he also writes fiction - conglomerations of patients' actual stories mashed up with fictional characters who all seem to want to murder each other! Howard lives in an inner-city suburb of Sydney with his wife, and their five adult children live nearby.
