My Happy Place is a book featuring happy thoughts and memories contributed by 54 prominent New Zealanders, from actor Sam Neill to musician Ladi6, NZ's oldest person Maudie Wilson to shepherdess Mandy Thow.

All contributions have been thoughtfully and beautifully illustrated by students at partner schools of the New Zealand charity KidsCan.

The overarching goal of the book is to donate proceeds from sales back to KidsCan, thereby helping Kiwi kids living in poverty to reach their potential in life.

Aside from the stunning pages of happy thoughts and artistry, My Happy Place also includes biographies of all contributors plus short biographies and photos of each young artist.
Award winning designer Vasanti Unka is responsible for the design of the book and prominent author Witi Ihimaera has written a Foreword, in which he describes My Happy Place as "one of the books of the year".

I bought this for my mother but loved it so much I kept it for myself. It's a permanent fixture on my bedside table. I particularly love the biographies of the young artists at the back.

“This wonderful book is not only a joy to read, it is inspirational. Wairarapa-born and raised author Melissa Mebus, supported by KidsCan chief executive Julie Chapman, has produced a compelling and moving book with a title that really explains the whole concept. Each of the many statements that make up the book — contributed by a variety of people of all ages and from all walks of life — are cleverly illustrated which adds an even greater flavour to the publication. At first glance, readers could be fooled into thinking My Happy Place is a children’s book, but it is not. It is a thought-provoking, inspiring book that simply puts to paper a place we all have and seldom share with others — our own happy place. Every copy sold of My Happy Place results in a donation being made to KidsCan, helping Kiwi kids living in poverty to reach their full potential. There is such a variety of intriguing happy places outlined in the book that it is hard to sort out the best, and I am sure each reader will settle on a different account as the one that sets his or her heart and mind in motion. For me, I liked the happy place contribution from Masterton tetraplegic and former champion horsewoman Catriona Williams whose career as an equestrian was cut short by an horrendous fall. Williams wrote that life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away, such as ‘‘ being really nervous before a big speech and then getting a standing ovation once you’re finished’’. I think readers will join with me in giving Mebus, her contributors, her illustrators and KidsCan a standing ovation when they close the covers of this excellent read." – Elizabeth Marrow, Northern Advocate, Wanganui Chronicle, Hawkes Bay Today and Wairarapa Times Age
