Darkly fascinating short novel depicts the struggles of a doubting, supremely alienated protagonist in a world of relative values. Seminal work introduced moral, religious, political and social themes that dominated Dostoyevsky's later masterworks. Constance Garnett's authoritative translation is reprinted here, with a new introduction.

About the Author

With his sympathetic portrayals of the downtrodden of 19th-century Russian society, Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) exercised immense influence on modern writers. His novels featured profound philosophical and psychological insights that anticipated the development of psychoanalysis and existentialism.

Considered by many to be the first piece of existentialist literature, Dostoevsky's 'Notes from the Underground' captures the hopeless misadventures of a man in crisis.

As usual, Dostoevsky's psychological insight reaches staggering heights on each turn of the page. The reader feels at times as if the author is making a direct psychological analysis of him/herself.

The overall tone is dark and neurotic, but speaks to the frustrated soul in a way that no other book I have encountered has achieved.

Highly recommended for any fan of Dostoevsky, or anyone who is searching for the meaning of life.
