Donald Schumacher is cofounder and medical director of the Center for Nutrition & Preventive Medicine and author of What I Need to Succeed, the basis for weight management strategies used at the Center. A frequent speaker to medical groups, he has presented research data on obesity to an FDA panel, and his publications have appeared in national medical peer review journals. Schumacher developed a 16-part obesity series that aired on public television, his work was featured in an ABC 20/20 story, and he has appeared regularly on radio and television. His medical training was at the University of Bologna, University of Pennsylvania Graduate Hospital, and Georgetown University Hospital. J. Allen Queen is professor and former chair of the Department of Educational Leadership at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A former classroom teacher, principal, college administrator, and university professor, he works with teachers and principals in the areas of managing priorities, time management, and stress reduction. Queen has written over 30 books and 70 articles, including The Frazzled Teacher’s Wellness Plan (Corwin Press 2004), The Block Scheduling Handbook (Corwin Press 2002), and books on karate and fitness for young readers. He has appeared on radio and television programs, including ABC′s World News Now, and has been a consultant to over 160 schools and districts in 36 states and 3 foreign countries in the areas of classroom discipline, school safety, block scheduling, and time management.
"The book tackles a major health problem that is significant
to our educational system. It provides considerable evidence to
support childhood obesity as a problem of interest for our
nation."
*Dolores Huffman, Associate Professor of Nursing*
"The book provides a good background history of how the shifts in
education policy have changed over the past 80-something years
and have developed a sedentary society. It demonstrates the
challenges that principals face today."
*James Gostomski, Physical Education Teacher*
"The book makes a distinct contribution to the field because
of the timeliness of the subject matter, the severity and demands
of the issue, and the need for more resources addressing this
subject."
*Stephanie Slowik, School Counselor*
"This concise and comprehensive text provides an outstanding game
plan at the tactical and operational levels for motivated building
principals."
*The School Administrator, May 2007*
"The authors present principals with a strategy guide for tackling
the obesity epidemic within the school walls. A valuable first step
for school administrators wondering how to begin improving the
health of their students."
*PsycCRITIQUES, August 2007, Vol. 52(33)*
"Schumacher and Queen′s book fits very nicely with the kind of
curricular and programmatic resources available to school personnel
regarding the treatment and prevention of overweight and obesity.
The authors did a good job at making medical information accessible
to someone who might lack expertise in that area."
*Education Review: A Journal of Book Reviews, January 2008*
