Excerpt from The Passions of the French Romantics Some remarks which might have served as a Preface having found their way into the First Chapter, the actual Preface need contain little beyond the author's acknowledgements of his indebtedness to predecessors in the field. The chief of these is M. Leon Seche, whose monographs on Lamartine, Alfred de Vigny, Sainte-Beuve, Alfred de Musset, and Juliette Drouet, contain much new matter, and present it graphically, gracefully and wittily. M. Michaud's monograph on Sainte-Beuve's Livre d'Amour is another scholarly composition of great value. Many of the misstatements in Aime-Martin's Life of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre have been convincingly exposed by M. Maury, and M. Maurice Souriau. M. Rene Doumic has published some of "Elvire's" most passionate letters to Lamartine. One is indebted to Mr. Wellington Wack for a selection of Juliette Drouet's letters to Victor Hugo.
