At first glance, Griff Burkett appears to have no redeeming features except for physical strength and an outstanding arm. The former NFL star quarterback has just finished a five-year prison stint for gambling and throwing a game and has returned to the outside world stripped of everything: money, home, respect, and friends. According to the conditions of his parole, he must get a job, an impossible task in Houston, where he is considered the lowest type of scum. His only option is to answer a mysterious summons from millionaire Foster Speakman, who has a bizarre proposal. Since Speakman is a paraplegic, he cannot father a child, a task he wants Griff to perform personally, not by artificial insemination. Griff will be paid extremely well for as long as the child lives but must keep this contract secret and disappear after the child is born. Victor Slezak is an excellent reader who makes the characters come alive. Even when the hero is behaving foolishly, Slezak manages to make one care about what happens to this clueless individual. Foster's wife, Laura, comes across as a strong woman who loves her husband dearly. Highly recommended for adult fiction in all libraries where Brown is a favorite.--Nancy Reed, Immanuel Baptist Church Lib., Paducah, KY Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
