In this title: together we'll journey together through bits of cognitive and neuroscience, learning and behavioral theory; you'll discover some surprising aspects of how our brains work; and, see how you can beat the system to improve your own learning and thinking skills. In this book you'll learn how to: use the Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition to become more expert; leverage the architecture of the brain to strengthen different thinking modes; avoid common 'known bugs' in your mind; learn more deliberately and more effectively; and, manage knowledge more efficiently. Software development happens in your head. Not in an editor, IDE, or design tool. It's time to take a pragmatic approach to thinking and learning, and start to refactor - and redesign - your brain.

Reviews

""I've recommended it to anyone who will stand still long enough to listen to me. I was familiar with some of the ideas and techniques from my various readings on the science of learning, but its invaluable to have them gathered in one concise book, especially one geared towards developers.""--Dr. Paul V. Gestwicki, Professor & Director of Undergraduate Programs, Ball State University""I've always been looking for something to help me improve my learning skills, but i've never found anything as effective as this book.""--Oscar Del Ben, Software Developer""Absolutely terrific! I'm only beginning the 3rd chapter and I've already found the book VERY, VERY useful. It makes me look at what I am doing and how I do it in a different light.""--Carol Saah, Java Software Developer

This is an interesting book for a number of reasons. It is a book that looks at learning from the perspective of someone who has been a programmer and a project manager. This gives the book a slightly different take on things compared to many other books on learning written by academics working in the relevant disciplines. I found the book something of an compendium: a lot of relevant concepts and information about individual learning and direction on some commonly used techniques. Some readers will perhaps find the anecdotes, diagrams and asides a little distracting but I think they will work to engage many readers. Many aspects of the book, such as the conversational style and use of images, reminded me somewhat of the approack found in O'Reiley's 'Head First' books.

If you have been studying learning and teaching for sometime you may not find much new here, although the pespective is refreshing. If you are looking for a book that canvases a variety of issues about how we learn and how you might do it better, written in an easy to follw way, I think you will like this book.
