Reviews

Once again Kerr leads us through the fact of history and the vagaries of human natureOne of the greatest master story-tellers in EnglishNods to Poirot suggest Kerr set himself the challenge of working the Holocaust into an Agatha Christie-style country house mystery. If so, he has pulled it off with aplomb - Sunday TimesSomehow Mr Kerr just gets better and better - TelegraphThis is a locked-room murder, worthy of Agatha Christie - Independent

Following the Edgar Award-nominated Field Gray, Kerr backtracks Police Commissar Bernie Gunther to 1941 Berlin for an eighth episode in his "Berlin Noir" series. Even in wartime, ordinary murders occur-but sometimes they aren't so ordinary. A Dutch railroad worker's death seems simple, but within a few months Gunther is in a castle outside of Prague and deep into solving a locked-room murder in the style of Agatha Christie's The Murder of Roger -Ackroyd. With Czech terrorism and espionage in the mix, nothing is simple at all. The story starts slowly but builds to a meticulously plotted crescendo. Paul Hecht provides an excellent performance as the voice of Gunther, pronouncing myriad German names and titles to perfection. VERDICT This will appeal equally to mystery lovers and readers of World War II fiction and nonfiction. ["Although part of a series, Prague Fatale stands alone quite well. Recommended for those who like both superb writing and the genre," read the review of the Putnam hc, LJ 4/1/12.-Ed.]-Janet Martin, Southern Pines P.L., NC (c) Copyright 2012.
