Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English novelist whose works of
romantic fiction set among the gentry have earned her a place as
one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English
literature. She was born at the Steventon rectory, later moving
with her family to Bath and then to Chawton in Hampshire. At the
age of 22 she commenced her best known novel, Pride and Prejudice,
which was originally called First Impressions. It was eventually
published in 1813 after much revision.
Four of her novels – Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice,
Mansfield Park and Emma – were published anonymously during her
lifetime, with Northanger Abbey and Persuasion published
posthumously in 1817. At her death she left 100 pages of an
unfinished novel, The Watsons, which was recently completed by New
York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray and published in 2026.
Rosamund Pike is an English actress who began her acting career in
stage productions such as Romeo and Juliet and Skylight. Following
her breakthrough performance as Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die
Another Day, she won the BIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress for
The Libertine and portrayed Jane Bennet in Pride & Prejudice. In
2014, her performance in the psychological thriller film Gone Girl
was met with widespread critical acclaim and she was awarded the
Saturn Award for Best Actress and was nominated for a number of
awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actress.
