Carolyn Kowalczyk is the author of several nonfiction books for children.
ea. vol: 30p. (Rookie Readers Series). CIP. Childrens. Oct. 1985. PLB $6.50. Gr 1-2 Neither of these ``Rookie Readers'' is a great addition to the beginning-reader genre. Both sport pedestrian watercolors and mediocre plots. A word list appears in the back of each. Katie couldn't play basketball, ride a bike, climb a tree, stay up late or play at the park like her big brother and sister because she is too little. But being small paysDad can pick her up but not the older siblings. A lame ending for a negative story, particularly since the siblings pictured look small enough to be lifted by Dad also. Of the two, Purple Is Part of a Rainbow is slightly better. Two-line rhymes such as , ``A sail is part of a boat. /A beard is part of a goat'' form the text. But who cares? Stick with the many more competent easy-to-read series. Margaret Gross, Madison School, Hinsdale, Ill.
