About the Author

Garen Ewing's The Rainbow Orchid series was first serialised on his website at rainboworchid.co.uk and later self-published before it was picked up by his publishers, Egmont. Garen's books, which follow the adventures of Julius Chancer are reminiscent of the world-famous Adventures of Tintin by Herge and they have gained critical acclaim among the comic book community. With over a million hits to his website prior to publication, his graphic novels are set to become future classics. Garen's love of drawing and writing goes back to when he was very young, and had to spend a lot of time in hospital, so his mum supplied him with plenty of comics to read, and pencils and blank paper to draw with, and he's been making comics ever since!

Reviews

"[The] setting is meticulously rendered, the storyline intricate and engrossing . . . Ewing has crafted something at once reverential and joyous that has a life of its own." --Financial Times

This debut graphic novel from England offers a delightful tale of pulp adventure in a classic style. Set in the 1920s, the first book in the Adventures of Julius Chancer series introduces a fierce competition over exotic flowers and an ancient sword. Julius takes on the quest to find a rare, mythical orchid, accompanied by silent movie star Lily Lawrence, in order to save a Lawrence family treasure from being gambled away. But diabolical businessman Urkaz Grope will stop at nothing to win his bet with Lily's father-including eliminating Julius and Lily. Complete with a nosy, chaos-causing reporter and a bumbling Hollywood agent, this first episode feels like an old friend from the outset, and young readers new to the style will find the clear lines and bright colors engaging, reminiscent of the Tintin adventures. Two more volumes are already available in the U.K. Ages 9-up. (Oct.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
