London, 1962. Eighteen-year-old Liz falls passionately in love with 31-year-old German divorcee and father Karl. However, Karl must return to work in America. Liz's parents agree to a year-long engagement, but after Karl's departure, they and her workmates strive to drive a wedge between the two. In their eyes, Karl is `too old' and `too divorced' and, of course, resides in America. Karl, in an intense emotional and sensitive state, reads too much into one of Liz's letters and abruptly breaks off the engagement, wounding them both indelibly. Later, Karl begins what will be a 12-year search for Liz, and in 1999, it comes to fruition. They are reunited, discover that the fervour of their love hasn't waned and at, 55 and 68 respectively, dream of a shared future that will restore the void of the missing 37 years. Remember Me is a romantic, real-life love story. From the acute pangs of first love to the internal worlds of the lovers, it reads like a diary, to the point where the reader feels intrusive: it is soul exposing, private, the memories too painful. While there is delight to be found in the story and it is told poetically, and the personal reasons for writing it are clear, its appeal to the reader is not.
