Reviews

Historians who dismiss psychobiographies as psychobabble will now have to consider this reasoned case for applying psychoanalytic interpretation to the study of presidential leadership. Volkan (psychiatry, Univ. of Virginia) and Norman Itzkowitz, a historian with psychoanalytic training, along with Andrew W. Dod, a former student of Itzkowitz, present a thoughtful portrait of Nixon that in no small part attributes his motivations, accomplishments, and failures to the emotional deprivation and physical beatings he endured from his mother and father, respectively. The White House tapes, illustrating Nixon's narcissism, were installed to validate his lasting importance, while Watergate resulted from his paranoia‘the need to go to any extreme to be number one. This illuminating portrait is counterbalanced by the historical biographies of Stephen Ambrose (the three-volume Nixon, LJ 5/1/87 LJ 11/1/89, LJ 10/15/91), Roger Morris (Richard Milhous Nixon, LJ 12/89), and Joan Hoff (Nixon Reconsidered, LJ 7/94). Strongly recommended for specialized collections on the presidency.‘Karl Helicher, Upper Merion Twp. Lib., King of Prussia, Pa.

Readable and provocative...Volkan, Itzkowitz and Dod have offered insight into how the personalities of leaders develop and why some leaders fall from grace. Biographers of Bill Clinton take note. -- Dean J.
