Victorian heroine Annalice Mallory, discovering the journal of her long-dead relative Ann Alice, sets off a chain of events that will change her life. She feels intense identification with the young girl, who was clearly murdered, but also, as a daughter of a mapmaking family, she is intrigued by the ``paradise island'' discovered by Ann Alice's lover. Using the map found with the journal, Annalice's brother goes off to locate the island. When no word is heard from him, Annalice pursues him to Australia. She finds romance and danger, as the apparently nonexistent island still has power to incite greed and murder. Typical Holt fare for public libraries. Literary Guild dual main selection.
