The latest instalment in the most famous thriller series of them all. Bourne is back, and this time the stakes are higher than ever...
Robert Ludlum is one of the world's bestselling authors and there are more than 300 million copies of his books in print. He is published in 32 languages and 50 countries. As well as blending sophisticated plotting and extreme pace, Robert Ludlum's novels are meticulously researched. In addition to the popular titles in the Covert-One series, Robert Ludlum's best-known books include THE SCARLATTI INHERITANCE, THE CHANCELLOR MANUSCRIPT and the Jason Bourne series. Eric Van Lustbader is the author of numerous novels in a variety of styles, but is most widely known as the author of twenty international bestselling thrillers including The Ninja and Black Heart. Born in New York City, he currently lives in New York State.
The latest installment in the Jason Bourne series finds the amnesiac superspy on a mission to prevent terrorists from bringing America to its knees via destruction of the country's vital natural resources-all while he tries to reconcile his mysterious past and avoid assassination by Russian agents. Having narrated several previous Bourne thrillers, Jeremy Davidson is something of an old hand at clearly conveying the books' dizzying twists and turns. His narration is imbued with a confidence indicative of familiarity with both plot and characters. He is particularly adept with accents, producing everything from silky Latino voices for Bourne's friends and enemies in Colombia and Spain to a guttural Russian dialect for Gen. Boris Karpov. Series fans will no doubt enjoy this new chapter of the Bourne story, but newcomers may want to first listen to previous audiobooks in the series to get up to speed. A Grand Central hardcover. Terrorists after a mineral essential to creating a powerful weapon pose only one obstacle for Jason Bourne in Lustbader's sixth tale about the late Ludlum's titular spy. Bourne needs the help of Boris Karpov, but the Russian agent has been ordered to kill his old friend. The headlong action ranges from the mountains of Colombia to Europe and Syria as Bourne battles his way out of one life-threatening situation after another. As is usual with this series, there are so many characters that the intricate plot occasionally becomes a bit muddled. Jeremy Davidson provides an excellent reading, offering his consistently impressive mix of international accents. Unfortunately, corny musical cues providing transitions and underscoring the action sequences distract from Davidson's fine work. Despite this annoyance, Lustbader creates enough excitement to entertain loyal fans of the series. [See Major Audio Releases, LJ 6/1/11.-Ed.]-Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr. Lib.
