Rory's Ethiopian Journal

This book is comprised of the writer’s journals and is a photographic diary of a trip to some of the main sites of the Highlands of Ethiopia.

It was the writer’s first visit to Africa and the selection of Ethiopia had been quite deliberate.

Ethiopia in the writer’s view had an edge over many of its neighbouring countries. It had seen much instability and conflict and suffered from regular struggles with disease, famine and war and was possibly not the most obvious place to visit.

It also had an enigmatic history and culture and a seemingly indomitable spirit as invading Italians had discovered to their cost.

It was a land of myths and mysteries and multiple ethnicities and it boasted a long and proud Christian tradition, a lost tribe of Israel and the Ark of the Covenant.

Recently it had become well known for its outstanding long distance runners and less well known for its importance to the Rastafarian community.

Ethiopia had its own language and alphabet, its very specific music and dances, its own calendar and its own way of telling the time.

Those were enough reasons to embark on this journey and many discoveries lay ahead on this memorable trip.
