About the Author

Rough Guides are written by expert authors who are passionate about both writing and travel. They have detailed knowledge of the areas they write about--having either traveled extensively or lived there--and their expertise shines through on every page. Jules Brown first visited the Lake District when he was 9 years old; all he can remember is that it was raining. Aged 15 he slept in the fields having spent his youth hostel money on beer. When he was 36 he got stuck up Jack's Rake. And when he was 47 he took his two young sons up their first fell - all they can remember is that it was raining. Between times, Jules has also written Rough Guides to Scandinavia, Sicily, Hong Kong, Washington DC, Barcelona, Spain, Portugal, England and Britain, as well as researching and editing many others. Originally from Somerset, Norm has spent much of his working life in Eastern Europe - he is the author of the Rough Guides to Slovenia, Romania and Budapest - but in recent years he has turned his hand to home shores as author of the Scotland, Wales and Ireland guides. These days he divides his time between Orkney and Somerset.
