When kinesics interrogator and California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special agent Kathryn Dance interviews psychopathic killer Daniel Pell about his efforts from prison to have evidence in an unsolved murder case destroyed, the interview occasions Daniel's carefully orchestrated, successful escape from custody. Kathryn leads CBI's work to recapture the former cult family leader and avoid losing jurisdiction to either the Monterey County Sheriff or the FBI. Though the action and intrigue in this well-produced abridgment have been preserved, it's suspected that much of the nuance in Kathryn's personal and professional life has been deleted. Listeners don't know or care nearly as much about her as they should to enjoy the novel fully. Those desiring to know more about why Kathryn is in the CBI or what happened between her and the two men in her life will likely have to find an unabridged version to go beyond the hints here. Still, this terrific, fast-moving thriller, read by Anne Twomey, features intricate plotting and ample suspense; recommended for adult audio collections.-Cliff Glaviano, Bowling Green State Univ.
