Charlie Priest was a newly promoted sergeant on the Leeds force when he was called to the scene of a tragic fire, deliberately set. Now a DI in nearby Heckley, Charlie jumps on the chance to re-open the investigation when a message left by a suicide suggests a new lead. The cat is well and truly amongst the pigeons for those who thought, after two decades, they were safe from justice. By a combination of luck, detective work and, Charlie would say, soaring flights of the investigative imagination, he is soon closing in on the perpetrators. But a cornered villain with nothing to lose can be dangerous for a copper who'll take every kind of risk in the hunt for justice.

About the Author

This is Stuart Pawson's sixth book featuring DC Priest (just call him Charlie...he insists),but is written in such a manner that it would also allow for a previous non reader of the Charlie Priest series to acquaint themselves with the main character.
Fort those who have been following the series however (as have I), one cannot help but feel the huge chasm between this book and the former one, which had highlighted the ending of a relationship which supposedly caused Charlie considerable hurt. Nothing of this is mentioned in this particular issue, and indeed very little of a relationship that reigned significant in previous issues is even mentioned, leaving the reader absolutely devoid of how Charlie copes (or coped) with this. Either that, or Charlie was (or is) absolutely devoid of any significant feelings regards relationships with significant others.
As such, the style and story line returns to the original writing of the Charlie Priest series, and hence a good place to start (if not already been reading). It includes the usual witticism and sarcasm attributed to Charlie who, while hailed as the Yorkshire equivalent of Inspector Morse, resembles (IMHO) more the casual, but very clever thinking of the American Colombo. If males can be attributed with intuitions (as do women), then Charlie very definitely has it, and this foreign male way of thinking leads to the required and appropriate solutions.
A little devoid of the earlier wit contained in former issues, but more full of bizarre twists, there is enough to keep the reader off balance, should they think they have the solution before Charlie.

Probably the best one of the series for me, so far. But a cornered villain with nothing to lose can be dangerous for a copper who’ll take every kind of risk in the hunt for justice.
