Dawn Gifford is a work-at-home mom to a spirited 8 year-old girl, but before she became a mom, she was a Master Gardener and Master Composter, horticulture teacher and Cooperative Extension agent, as well as a certified arborist and Permaculture designer. She founded one of the first greenroof companies and social enterprises in the nation (D.C. Greenworks), and spent most of the last 15 years developing award-winning workforce training programs for "green-collar" environmental jobs in tree care, greenroofing and bioretention, and urban agriculture. Turning her interests to home and hearth after becoming a mother, she created Small Footprint Family to share her experience in sustainable living with a wider audience. Dawn writes articles and books about: - saving money while conserving water, energy, oil, trees and other natural resources; - whole food nutrition and eco-friendly food choices (including tons of grain-free and dairy-free recipes); DIY and sustainable family living; - non-toxic homes and natural healthcare; and gardening, homesteading and permaculture. The aim of this book (and the mission of Small Footprint Family) is to give you the resources you need to make powerful choices that improve your health and well-being- and thereby the health and well-being of the only planet we've been blessed with. Hill, U.S. Forest Service "Sustainability Starts at Home not only explains WHY sustainability is so important, but shares HOW we can make positive changes that really make a difference. There are so many simple and innovative suggestions, I had no trouble finding several that I can start implementing this week! This is a great read for anyone who wants to save time and get healthy while helping the planet at the same time." --Elizabeth Walling, The Nourished Life "As the wife of a LEED-certified Professional Building Analyst, and as a health blogger with an interest in green living, I'm pretty savvy when it comes to sustainability solutions in the home. But I was absolutely floored by how much I learned from this book! You could easily save more than the cost of purchasing Sustainability Starts at Home in your first month of making these changes. Everyone needs this!" --Emily Benfit, Butter Believer "If you really want to save the planet but also save the money in your wallet, this is the book for you. Sustainability Starts at Home is great for newly aware people because it is simple to read and provides easy ways to be sustainable and save money. This book is also wonderful for people who have already been living green and want new ways to continue to minimize their footprint. I love this book-I absolutely and highly recommend it to each and every person!" --Loriel Adams, Naturally Loriel
