Reviews

Lynda Rooke, the reader of this technically well-produced audiobook, gives each character a unique voice and brings out the "flavor" of each personality. Taking place in Liverpool at the beginning of World War II amid rationing and blackouts to avoid German bombers, the story focuses on two good friends and neighbors: Molly Bennett, the quieter of the two, and outspoken, bawdy Nellie McDonough. Rosie O'Grady, a pretty young woman, arrives from a farm in Ireland to live with Molly's parents and earn money in the city, as her life becomes entangled with those of the people around her. Nellie's strident voice, as Rooke plays her, becomes tiresome and grates on the listener, even though it may be a perfectly suitable portrayal of Nellie. Nellie and Molly do grow on the listener as the novel evolves, but nothing much seems to be happening quickly enough to hold one's interest. In fact, even half way through the set of tapes, one isn't sure just where the story is going. This will probably translate into low circulation and early returns from all but the most dedicated American listeners. An optional purchase for libraries where Jonker's books are popular.ÄNancy Paul, Brandon P.L., WI Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
