PHILLIP MALLETT is Senior Lecturer in English at the University of St Andrews. His work of Hardy includes an edition of The Mayor of Casterbridge, and two collections of essays A Spacious Vision (with R.P.Draper) and The Achievement of Thomas Hardy.
