Randall Nicol read history at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and served for ten years afterwards in the Scots Guards. On leaving the Army he read law at Edinburgh University and then qualified as a solicitor practising in Scotland. He began the research which has developed into this, his first book, eleven years ago, being able to devote more time to it after he retired. He has written a number of articles for the Guards Magazine and the Scots Guards Magazine, chairs the Regimental Historical Committee Scots Guards and is a member of the British Commission for Military History. He and his wife live in Edinburgh.
'Till The Trumpets Sound Again" Vol 1 and Vol 2 by R Nicol impressed me no end. Very few things will I whole heartedly recommend for people to spend their hard earned money on. * A Wargamer's Needful Things * The two volumes must be judged the best and most exhaustive regimental history in the Great War....quite possibly the best Great War work of 2016. * Stand to! * Making full use of the excellent and extensive regimental records, Randall Nicoll, a former officer of the Scots Guards, has assembled such a tour de force it is perhaps more of a surprise that this is his first full publication...Most highly recommended. * Society of Friends of the National Army Museum * Each of these books is proof that history constantly evolves; that there's always something new to say. They remind us that the Somme was not the pointless slaughter of popular myth, and that many of the participants thought the sacrifice worthwhile. * The Telegraph * Masterpiece...a towering work...cannot be too highly recommended. * Guards Magazine * The author spent 12 years meticulously researching archives and the result is a first class work, which will prove essential reading for historians of WWI, battlefield tour guides and visitors to the battleground...histories like this do not come along very often...this is a truly remarkable history, which a reader can return to many times and find it very fresh. * Gun Mart * The extraordinary amount of detail gathered in this monumental account of the Scots Guards and the part they played in the Great War is testament to Randall Nicol's painstaking research and the minutiae of detail amassed. The result is possibly the most intensely accurate picture of life on the Western Front, with moments of hilarity interspersed with the sad knowledge that for many of their comrades, this was the final frontier. An amazing body of work. * Books Monthly * Till the Trumpet Sounds Again is a beautifully produced, superbly illustrated, homage to the Scots Guards of the First World War. * British Journal for Military History *
