She has taught for more than 20 years at Portland Community College which, thankfully, does not much resemble the dark and quirky Middlebridge College in Utterly Heartless. Underwood is the author of one previous novel. Her work has been compared to that of Norton Juster, Alexander McCall Smith, Carl Hiaasen, and J.K. Rowling.
