Tom Robbins has been called "a vital natural resource" by The Portland Oregonian, "one of the wildest and most entertaining novelists in the world" by the FT, and "the most dangerous writer in the world today" by Fernanda Pivano of Italy's Corriere della Sera. A Southerner by birth, Robbins has lived in and around Seattle since 1962. His novels include Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates, Jitterbug Perfume, Still Life With Woodpecker, Skinny Legs And All, Half Asleep In Frog Pajamas and Another Roadside Attraction.
Robbins, of course, is not for everyone. His alienated, hedonistic, iconoclastic rhapsodizing and digressions strike many as smug and long-winded. His plots are usually just cheerful nonsense; his prose, though, is supple and lively. The author is especially a comic master of simile, metaphor, and imagery, never settling for a clich?. His latest confection intermingles characters from Japanese folklore with voluntarily MIA American soldiers and circus performers. Throw in a little interspecies sex, some drug running, a woman with a clown fetish, and any number of rants on society, religion, and the military, and what you get is mostly a skeleton for Robbins to hang his wordplay on. Reader Barrett Whitener catches the spirit of the fun, though his various East Asian accents all sound suspiciously like stereotypes. Still, this is an excellent choice for most libraries.-John Hiett, Iowa City P.L. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
