*Craft Focus, December/ January issue*
Over the last few years, Sarah-Jayne Fragola has built up an
enviable online reputation as a crochet expert with her YouTube
tutorials under the name Bella Coco. With this book, she has
created a well-laid-out guide for the complete beginner. The first
sections cover the basics such as the 'anatomy of a crochet hook'.
There is a table of the different sizing schemes with the
recommendations that 'the most accurate measurements for a hook is
the metric sizing'. The types of hooks now available are described.
After a brief look at other useful equipment, there is a section on
the different ways yarns are presented (balls, skeins, hanks, etc.)
and how to interpret both yarn weights and types. The following
section on colour presents an easy-to-follow look at the colour
wheel theory. The book then moves on to giving step-by-step
instructions on the basic crochet stitches - all well illustrated
by clear photographs [...] Useful information is then given on
swatching, the different terminology and abbreviations used within
UK and USA patterns, and the international symbols for charting
patterns. This general information part of the book covers the
various blocking techniques. The remaining part of the book is
taken up with the nine projects which are 'arranged in order of
difficulty, from the easiest to the more complex'. Sarah-Jayne has
'designed the projects so that new techniques are added with each
one'. This book has been very well produced and will be of great
benefit to anyone wanting to start on this wonderful craft. It
would also be good for anyone wanting to increase their confidence
and skill.
