It was a golden age of music, when rock 'n' roll and pop was on the rise and local audiences were hungry for more. With TV in its infancy, 1958 heralded the beginning of the much-loved national television triumph - Bandstand.
Created by TCN-9 executive Bruce Gyngell and modelled on the successful American musical / variety show of the same name, Bandstand was hosted by the ever-charming Brian Henderson - setting the standard for 14 entertaining years and presenting an astonishing 1500 local and international acts during its illustrious reign.
Featuring 11 classic episodes from 1960-1962 across 3 DVDs, Best of Bandstand Volume 5 includes US artists such as The Sapphires, Chubby Checker performing 'Pony Time', legendary local performers The De Kroo Brothers, The Delltones, The Allen Brothers (featuring a fresh faced Peter Allen), Patsy Ann Noble, Lana Cantrell, Jimmy Little performing 'Shadow of the Boomerang', Col Joye, Lucky Starr, Judy Stone, Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vee, John Laws and Ian Turpie. Including fascinating sponsorship spots, audience contests, lively 'dance time' footage and candid interviews, thoughtfully packaged into topical specials, such as The Country Style Show and The New Faces Show, Best of Bandstand Volume 5 captures the excitement of an era - where television showcased the stars of the Australian and international music scene.
