1934, America. The Dustbowl. A fugitive named Ben Hawkins finds refuge within a traveling carnival comprised of a tarot card reader and her catatonic/telekinetic mother, a blind mentalist, a bearded lady, and conjoined twins, amongst others. The carnival is owned by the mysterious and unseen Management, who has designs on the young Hawkins, for the boy is concealing an untapped gift: he can heal the lame and raise the dead--at a price. Ben also finds himself disturbed by cryptic and prophetic dreams, which he shares with a Methodist preacher in California, Brother Justin Crowe. Brother Justin, convinced he is following God's will, has begun to practice his own extraordinary talents, although the preacher's plans increasingly lead to disturbing and tragic consequences. In this "last great age of magic," Ben Hawkins and Justin Crowe are moving toward a great conflict between Good and Evil, although it not yet clear on which sides these men will stand.

The series held great promise on scenery and the acting was good .But it took the entrie series to build to any height at all . Generally it was to slow in its delivery and the viewer was slumping in his seat waiting for ....something to happen . Still it was very watchable .

How this show managed to get axed is beyond me, the acting is very good and the storylines particularly in season 2 become excellent, perhaps better than anything else currently on television. Regardless of the fact that you will not see a conclusion to this series it is very much worth watching anyhow. The atmosphere, acting and plot is fantastic.

Carnivale is in my opinion one of the best that television has had to offer in a long while. It’s up there with shows like The Sopranos and Firefly. There are similarities in some themes to the classic Angel and Buffy series ie. Mystical battles between good and evil, but where Buffy and Angel can seem cheesy and glossy at times Carnivale never strays from its perfectly set Depression era atmosphere. This is everything that every other good vs evil show wished it could be but never was. A real damn pity that it was axed at the end of the 2nd season. This buffoonery is further evident from the fact that the show was nominated for 7 Emmy awards. In any case, this is a real piece of art.

An excellent set up, for this depression area theme, involving the denizens of a mysterious carnival, and the struggle to gain control of, or influence over, a young man with supernatural healing powers. Moore, the producer, has made a lot of excellent work recently, and this is no exception. There is interesting mystery and suspense at the heart of it - who owns the carnival? Where is Ben's father?

This show is great. You may just think its about a simple Carnivale and you will see weird looking people and a ferris wheel and such but it is so much more.
Around the simple setup of the show is a massive intertwining plot that spans mulitple generations of epic proportions in a Good VS Evil Battle. A Magnificent thrilling story is unvailed at a slow pace that is not for everybody, but when you get the answers it is very much worth the wait

Carnivale is really a magnificent show that has so many twists and turns that it is a neccessity to buy this first season set of dvds just so you can fully understand the concept that they are trying to portray. This is a great show that stays with you long after you watch it. a really good buy for anybody who is a fan of good tv.
