If you believe in love at first sight, you'll never stop looking. Director Mike Nichols (The Birdcage, Angels in America) brings Patrick Marber's highly acclaimed theatrical tour de force Closer to the screen. An uncompromisingly honest look at modern relationships, Closer is the story of four strangers (Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen) their chance meetings, instant attractions and brutal betrayals. Funny, shocking and powerful, Closer is reminiscent of such classic Nichols fare as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Carnal Knowledge.

This is a Region 4 disc, the local region for Australia.

Rosabel on
This was an incredibly well written film which portrays what I think is a hugely more realistic representation of what love and relationships are like in real life. The dialogue at times is deliciously biting and is incredibly well acted. I think what I liked most about this film was that it didn’t try to “redeem” itself with a happy ending, making it tragic yet hugely gratifying.

This movie possibly has one of the best scripts ever written. It is about four people who sleep with each other and lie and destroy relationships. A very intricate look at human relationship and personalities. Oh, and this is probably the best performances each member of the cast have ever given. Watch it

"Closer" is a clever study of the interplay between four people who seem to live in their own intimate cosmos, and not in the rest of the world. The acting is superb: Natalie Portman is incandescent, Jude Law is emotional and vibrant, Julia Roberts is in and out of control, and the rough Clive Owen, who seems manipulative, is perhaps the most vulnerable of all. The needy Alice (Natalie Portman) proves to be the most independent. The soundtrack is emotive and supportive; never obtrusive. There is never any actual sex in the movie - sorry if you were hoping for that - but it is highly sexually charged, passionate, and erotic. Having seen it many times, I find it engaging and quietly beautiful to watch. I find myself vascillating between agreeing and disagreeing with their choices. It is a thought provoking and intelligent film.

This movie could have been brilliant if there was anything to like about the characters. I completely disagree with the previous reviewer, there was nothing sweet about the movie, and Alice was not its central character. She grew the most during the movie, but into what? The women in thos movie are weak, and Larry is calculating and self-interested primarily, and Daniel is a childish fop who expects everything to work out in his favour. I'm not sure what Mike Nichols was trying to achieve, but I didn't particularly like it.

Sweet film about relationships, where more than two people are involved! Four characters, with the freespirited Alice at their centre love one another in a way which seems to preclude happy endings, but not loveless cohabitation, relationships of convenience and frequent affairs. This is a brilliant and subtle film about complicated people.

I'd have to say it, this movie is not what it appears to be, not worth the $15 bucks at the movies and not worth it at all, thinking of watching a movie about love and affairs etc, you get to the end thinking, why did i watch this?

Closer is a really obnoxious movie featuring an airbrushed cast as unsympathetic characters behaving badly. We are supposed to care less, but tis quite impossible. Director Mike Nichols made some great incisive movies back in the sixties and seventies. Closer doesn't compare. If this is supposed to be a truthful look at the state of relationships today it paints a sad picture.

Closer is a really obnoxious movie. It features an airbrushed cast playing painfully attractive and shallow people who behave badly and we are expected to care less. Director Mike Nichols made some great and incisive movies back in the sixties and seventies. Closer doesn't compare, and if its supposed to be an insigtful look at contemporary relationships then it paints a bleak picture.
