Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

Synopsis

Some Thing Has Found Us On the eve of his departure for Japan, Rob (Michael Stahl David) sees his going away party as an opportunity to confess unresolved feelings and tie up loose ends. His agenda takes an unexpected turn when a jolt shakes the revealers. The crowd quiets down to watch news reports of an earthquake, then rushes to the roof to assess the damage. A fireball explodes on the distant horizon. A power failure follows. Confusion gives way to panic as the party goers stumble through the blackout and into the streets. Amid the human screams and one inhuman roar, Rob and his friends must traverse a landscape that has changed, overtaken by something otherworldly, terrifying, monstrous.

Cloverfield is someting, a thriller suspense of which I thought was on par with Blair's Witch Project.

The movie was basically boring for the first half hour where you watched young people having a party but when you see the whole party suffered a black out after the skyscraping building suffered a jolt, then things started to become interesting.

The overall movie is, in parts, pretty boring, otherwise there are some wonderful special effects in some parts. I find it rather annoying when the camera is constantly moving and shaking around as if being held by an amateur cameraman but we've got to remind ourselves that the cameraman is actually one of the main characters. The notion of this movie being taken by a 'budding' cameraman is mostly what this movie is about...that including whatever those strange creatures are, the objects of suspense.

Its not the greatest of movies but if you enjoy Blair's witch project, then you might like Cloverfield which is in the city, not out in some forsaken forest somewhere.
To be honest I think I'll prefer Cloverfield to Blair's witch project. Same thriller suspense, different objects.

I really disliked this movie. The first part of the film was incredibly boring and uneventful. The entire movie is shot by a hand-held camera which is in the hands of one of the characters. The constant shaking of the screen is simply annoying.

After all the fuss over this film and its marketing campaign, this is indeed a movie worthy of your time and i was involved with the film all the way through. The effects are top class and the creature is shown just enough but not too early. The characters we follow are rather interesting if not a bit annoying but they do at least establish themselves and arent just cardboard cutouts. An intersting experiment and i look forward to similar movies and new genres of films being made following the success of this
