A top-notch cast including HELEN MIRREN, CLIVE OWEN and DAVID KELLY, headline this heart-felt comedy/drama based on a true story. The film brilliantly conveys the special bond formed when a gardening author and TV personality, Georgina Woodhouse discovers the unlikely gardening talents of a disagreeable band of prison inmantes. GREENFINGERS brings you the laughs and the genuine closeness to characters that you felt in other gerat British films like BILLY ELLIOT and THE FULL MONTY.

Clive Owen stars as a prison inmate who goes into an experimental "open" prison where the inmates walk around freely and get job training for their impending releases. While there, he discovers he has a talent for growing flowers. His talent is recognized by a gardening guru who encourages him and four other inmates to enter a national gardening competition.

This is a Region 4 disc, the local region for Australia.

Cristie on
Greenfingers is a story of redemption by horticulture. Clive Owens does a good job of portraying a man imprisoned since he was 18 years old for murder, who ultimately is redeemed by discovering that he can foster life in the garden. At times Owens is too cold and distant--his portrayal would have been better if he had brought a little more variation in his emotional state.

The supporting cast of British character actors do a nice job and are charming and sympathetic. Mirren plays the English matriarch with aplomb but overdoes it a little--just like the screen play which tries a little too hard to be cute at times. The major problem with the movie was a poor soundtrack--it was not well matched with the emotional content of the scenes.

This was a movie that had a lot of potential that did not quite become fulfilled.

Even though this film is funny I wouldn't class it as a comedy. in prison they are on work projects. working at a old lady's house she decides that there is potential and eventually gets them to display their flowers in a show. on the side is a love story and it is an engaging film.
