Only one problem, no subtitles so it is no good for the hard of hearing

Brilliant. A superb portrayal of ancient Rome, its politics and intrigues.

This series of programs is something you will treasure forever. You can't watch them too often, and you will chuckle over the evil actions, and draw deep breath at the history that unfolds. And what a series of performances!

A well written and well cast series which describes the life of the upper classes in ancient Rome as only the Brits can do it.

I bought this because I'd read the books and seen this famous BBC series when I was a youngster at uni many years ago. I love good historical fiction - and this is still the best screened!!! None of the modern special effects, just good old-fashioned superb British acting. I vividly remembered one episode in particular - it came with an "Adults Only" warning when the show was first aired - I was haunted by it for days after. I'm happy to report that it still packs a heck of a wallop! WOW! Derek Jakobi is terrific as Claudius, head-twitch, stammer and all, and you remember Siân Phillips as Livia, still-faced and deadly, long after each episode ends. The cast is stellar, including many young and coming British actors of the time who've long since established themselves as stars of English and American film and theatre. Fairly "talky" - most of the action happens offscreen and is commented upon, but intensely involving for all that. By the end of the second series - Claudius the God - you feel you could live quite comfortably in Ancient Rome in aristocratic circles - or maybe not quite so comfortably, given the precarious nature of power and of those who wield it for good or ill!

This classic stands the test of time very well. I found it still as engaging and convincing as when it was first viewed by me approximately 40 years ago. Excellent acting and fine writing.
I first saw this series many years ago and wasn't sure if it would stand the test of time. It certainly has, the quality of acting is superlative, I can highly recomend this.
Brilliant acting, story, filming, the whole story seat glueing from start to finish.
