I bought this because I'd read the books and seen this famous BBC series when I was a youngster at uni many years ago. I love good historical fiction - and this is still the best screened!!! None of the modern special effects, just good old-fashioned superb British acting. I vividly remembered one episode in particular - it came with an "Adults Only" warning when the show was first aired - I was haunted by it for days after. I'm happy to report that it still packs a heck of a wallop! WOW! Derek Jakobi is terrific as Claudius, head-twitch, stammer and all, and you remember Siân Phillips as Livia, still-faced and deadly, long after each episode ends. The cast is stellar, including many young and coming British actors of the time who've long since established themselves as stars of English and American film and theatre. Fairly "talky" - most of the action happens offscreen and is commented upon, but intensely involving for all that. By the end of the second series - Claudius the God - you feel you could live quite comfortably in Ancient Rome in aristocratic circles - or maybe not quite so comfortably, given the precarious nature of power and of those who wield it for good or ill!
