The enormous popularity of period costume dramas set in the English countryside has led to huge interest in the real-life stories of the amazing stately homes that dot the landscape and often serve as the settings for these lush productions. This five-part series explores four of the best-known homes in England and provides a primer for understanding the inner workings of the British stately homes in the early 20th century, as well as revealing the incredibly rich history of their occupants.

The series shows us inside some of the great manor houses in England.
Criticism is always unjustly laid at the 'upstairs/downstairs' attitude of the wealthy.
Before the first world war, these manor houses employed ONE MILLION uneducated people
and without this employment, their families would face starvation. Woman could chose
to work as maids and so have a place to live and money to spend without having to be
forced into marriage, beatings by husbands was the norm, and having a child every year,
the only other choice for an uneducated female. Huge taxes are imposed upon these Grand Houses today, and many had to be torn down because their owners could not pay. Thankfully, some still remain and now tourism brings in the money to help pay the way and we are able to enjoy the sites and gardens that bring a bit of loveliness to this hard world of today filled with too many
people only thinking of themselves
