Brendan OMalley (Kirk Douglas), a former gunslinger, arrives at the Mexican home of his old flame, Belle Breckenridge (Dorothy Malone) to find her married to a drunkard (Joseph Cotten) preparing for a cattle drive to Texas. Hot on OMalleys heels is Dana Stribling (Rock Hudson), a vengeful sheriff, who for personal reason wishes to return OMalley back to his jurisdiction. Both men join Breckenridge and his wife on the drive. When Stribling starts to court Belle, and her teenage daughter shows an interest in OMalley, tensions mount before Texas is even in sight.
Made by maverick director Robert Aldrich, The Last Sunset is one of the last classic Westerns, heralding the dawn of a more violent breed of Western helmed by the likes of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah.
