Performer Notes
  • The great Andres Segovia has called John Williams "a prince of the guitar." The Australian-born Williams moved to London and studied with the legendary Segovia, and also at the Royal College of Music in London. This recording focuses primarily on Spanish repertoire and celebrates Williams's 50th anniversary as a performer.
  • It is next to impossible to summarize a career as glorious as that of Williams on a single disc, but this recording does offer a generous sampling of the music that will fascinate lovers of this fine musician. The famous 'Variations on a Theme by Mozart' by Fernando Sor opens the recital. Williams plays with tenderness, and in the more extroverted passages, great energy. A series of brief pieces by Segovia are included, and it's a thrill to hear the student pay homage to his master. Williams also shines in music by two giants of Iberian piano music, Granados and Albeniz. A special treat is the rendition of a Domenico Scarlatti Keyboard Sonata transcribed for guitar. This is an ideal collection for those already familiar with the artistry of Williams, as well as those meeting the master for the first time.
