Performer Notes
  • Like many Los Angeles modern rock groups of the latter days of the 2000s, the Airborne Toxic Event feel like a self-contained chronicle of all alt rock trends of the past two decades. On their eponymous debut, the group run the gamut from slowly swirling shoegaze, Ian Curtis impressions, and stately strummed guitars to tightly wound Strokes-ian pop and thumping disco-rock, executing them all efficiently. This placidity is most evident on the slower songs. Airborne Toxic Event are better when they lean heavily on the Strokes' persistent pulse, or when they recycle classic alt rock tropes, not quite making them their own, but at least revealing the depth of their good taste. [A U.K. version was also released.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (p.59) - "[The album is] enthralled with guitar noise....It's also sewn through with an endearing passion that screams of potential."

CMJ - "They mix soaring string sections, but add a punch of jangly guitars....Lead singer Mikel Jollett's rumbling baritone colors these buoyant melodies with a tinge of sorrow..."

Q (Magazine) (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[With] opener 'Wishing Well,' the lustful 'Gasoline' and 'Something New''s confused relationship tracing a historical line from The Strokes to The Killers..."

Blender (Magazine) (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "On 'Innocence,' a gorgeous viola intro gives way to ecstatic new-wave-ish keyboards, and the rousing 'Sometime Around Midnight' makes late-night pining sound positively heroic."

Clash (magazine) (p.101) - "A tragic record of turmoil set to towering pop blasts; an emotive hurricane is upon us."
