  • Bill Monroe was not just one of the most celebrated bandleaders and instrumentalists in the history of bluegrass music, he's universally acknowledged as the man who truly invented the style, kicking up the speed and tightening the interplay of traditional string band music, adding high lonesome harmonies, and giving the players room to trade off solos. Monroe's band the Bluegrass Boys was also a training ground for some of the most celebrated pickers in the game, including Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, Carter Stanley, Mac Wiseman, and many more. And His Bluegrass Boys 1950-1958 is a four-disc box set that features 97 tracks from the group's run in the '50s, with appearances by Jimmy Martin, Carter Stanley, Hal Smith, Rudy Lyle, Owen Bradley, and others. This set is a treasure trove for serious bluegrass fans, documenting an important period in the history of the genre's most influential artist. ~ Mark Deming
